The Prime Time Sports Report: 7/17/2007

Steve Mark, the "Voice" of the Dynamo join Michael and Steve. David Beckham has arrived in the United States, and 5,000 fans turned out to the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. to welcome him.

The Astros are off to a less-than-stellar start to the second half of the season. We'll recap the mid-summer classic, and talk about Tony LaRussa's controversial decision to keep Albert Pujols on the bench in the bottom of the 9th, bases loaded, 2 outs, need a hit to win situation.

The Rockets are in summer league action, and the Houston Dynamo are on a 10-game unbeaten streak. Also, the Dynamo recently broke the MLS All-time shutout record.

7-4 Homestand Leads Astros Into Break

The Astros wrapped up a 11 game homestand Sunday with an 8-3 win against the New York Mets. The Astros took three of four from the Colorado Rockies, two of three from the Philadelphia Phillies, and two of four from the Mets.

Roy Oswalt, on his way to San Francisco for the All-Star Game on Tuesday, closed the homestand with a brilliant outing. Oswalt gave up three runs on seven hits, gave up one walk striking out five. Leading the way offensively for the Astros was Chris Burke going 2-4 with a home run, two RBI, and three runs scored. Hunter Pence continues his bid for National League Rookie of the Year with a 2-5 day with a double and a triple. Also driving in runs were Lance Berkman, Eric Bruntlett, Morgan Ensberg, and Carlos Lee.

The club is off for the All-Star break and then travels to Chicago, Washington, and Pittsburgh before returning back to Minute Maid Park on July 23rd.

Dynamo, Holden crush RBNY 4-0 to Keep Unbeaten Streak Alive!

It was a night filled with goals and goal celebrations at Robertson Stadium in Houston --well at least for one team.

The Defending MLS Cup Champion Houston Dynamo defeated the New York Red Bulls 4-0 in front of 14,072 at Robertson Stadium on Thursday night.

Joseph Ngwenya and Stuart Holden led the way for the men in orange. Ngwenya recorded two goals, and Holden served up two assists (both on Ngwenya's goals), scored a goal of his own (his second of the season, third of his career), and sent in a corner which eventually led to Brian Ching's third goal of the year.

The scoring was opened in the 27th minute after former Dynamo and newest Red Bull Kevin Goldthwaite pulled on Midfielder Brian Mullan's shirt just enough to bring him down stop the breakaway which would've ensued. Goldthwaite was shown a yellow card by referee Tim Weyland for a 'professional foul,' and Stuart Holden took the free kick. Holden whipped in a ball which crossed to the opposite side of the penalty area and found the head of Ngwenya, who, with that, recorded his fourth goal on the season.

After the game, Ngwenya said he's obviously happy with extending the unbeaten streak --especially against New York.

"It's great," Ngwenya said. "Hopefully we can keep it going on [Sunday]. It's good to get three points. Everybody stepped up tonight. They beat us over at their place, and it's good to get a win against them here at home. Everybody is happy."

The scoring continued for the men in orange off of a Stuart Holden corner kick which bounced around inside the 18 before Brian Ching found the lower left corner of RBNY goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus and his third goal of the season.


Ngwenya scored again at the 50 minute mark --also via a Stuart Holden set piece. This would mark Ngwenya's fifth goal of the season and Holden's fourth assist of the season.

Holden, who had a career game, was filling in for Brad Davis, who is sidelined indefinitely with a torn medial meniscus. After the game, Holden said that although he's happy with his performance --which helped to render a 'convincing result,' Davis is a key part of the team who is going to be greatly missed.

"Brad is a big part of our team," Holden said. "We're obviously missing him. People are going to get called to step up. I offered a couple set pieces in tonight, and Joe [Ngwenya] got some great headers. Helping out with a goal is icing in the cake since we're already up three-nil. It was just a convincing result for us."

The men in orange weren't finished yet. Forward Nate Jaqua came on late in the game, and fed Holden the ball on his second goal of the season. Jaqua obtained possession on the left side just atop the 18. He laid off a beautiful ball to Holden, who in turn juked two Red Bull defenders out of their boots to put Dynamo up 4-0.

Jaqua, who was aquired via a mid-week trade with the Los Angeles Galaxy, said that he was pleased to come on in his first game with his new club and create the opportunity for a goal.

"I was just excited to get out there," Jaqua said. "It was a great game tonight. The team played great. To be a part of that -- even if it was only for 10 minutes -- was great. Hopefully I can help this team."

Dynamo Head Coach Dominic Kinnear was also pleased with the result.

"Excellent," Kinnear said. "I think we won pretty convincingly, and I thought we played well on and off the ball. We attacked with some of the best stuff we've had all year."

One of the players you might not have read about in the paper on Friday morning is defender Patrick Ianni. Ianni, did a superb job on former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel. Angel, is the league leader in goals --averaging just over one per game. Ianni held Angel quiet through midway through the second half, when RBNY Head Coach Bruce Arena subbed him out for MLS Veteran Clint Mathis.

Kinnear said he was quite pleased with Ianni's coverage of Angel.

"He did a good job," Kinnear said. "We just told him to stay close, be physical with him. His best moves are when he's in the box. We told him to just always be aware of where he was. Pat [Ianni] had a good game tonight."

Ianni also commented on what it was like to play against a former English Premier League superstar.

"It's a privilege to play alongside the guys on my team, first of all," Ianni said. "The veterans and starters on our team make up the best squad in the league. Playing against Juan Pablo Angel is a privilege as well. I was just making sure that I was concentrating every second of the game. Even when he left they had Clint Mathis coming into the game."

Starting on Sunday Dynamo go into a stretch where they will play five games in eleven days. They'll of course be sticking to their MLS domestic league schedule, but they'll also be opening play against the Charleston Battery in U.S. Open Cup action. Last year Dynamo made a semi-final exit with a loss to the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Speaking on playing five games in eleven days, Holden thinks the team's main objective will be to get rest and maintain focus.

"We've just got to get our rest," Holden said. "[We've got to] keep icing, keep training hard, keep our fitness up, and we obviously have to be smart with a lot of games in few days. Minutes are going to get around, so everyone is going to have to be prepared. I think [Dominic Kinnear] and [assistant soach John Spencer] do a good job at getting us prepared for all those games."

Dynamo's next action is against D.C. United on Sunday night at Robertson Stadium in Houston.

Special Treat for Roy-O

The O's Bros can pack up for San Francisco, Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt has been named as a replacement for Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz who is sidelined with an ailing shoulder.

Oswalt, the beneficiary of hard luck with little run support, is 7-5 on the year with a 3.52 ERA. He was on the ballot for the NL final vote along with the Cub Carlos Zambrano, Padre Chris Young, D'back Brandon Webb, and Pirate Tom Gorzelanny. It is Oswalt's third All-Star selection.

Starry Night in San Francisco

The rosters have been released for the 78th All-Star Game to be held on July 10th at AT&T Park in San Francisco. In a shocking last minute development, San Francisco Giants left fielder Barry Bonds, got the final starting spot in the National League outfield joining New York Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran, and Cincinnati Reds right fielder Ken Griffey, Jr. It is Bonds' fourteenth All-Star selection. Rounding out the NL squad is Milwaulkee Brewer first baseman Prince Fielder and Philadelphia Phillie second baseman Chase Utley. The New York Mets represent the left side of the infield with David Wright at third base and Jose Reyes at shortstop. The catcher is Los Angeles Dodger Russell Martin. For Fielder and Martin, it is their first All-Star start.

The American League squad is headlined by the Major League leading vote-getter at third base, New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez. He is joined by teammate Derek Jeter at shortstop. Boston slugger David Ortiz was voted to play first base. Detroit Tiger Placido Polanco will be starting at second base and Tiger catcher Ivan Rodriguez rounds out the infield. The starting outfield for the AL consists of Tiger Magglio Ordonez, Seattle Mariner Ichiro Suzuki, and Los Angeles Angel outfielder Vladimir Guerrero. For Polanco, it is his first start as an All-Star.

Notable reserves are Houston Astro Carlos Lee, St. Louis Cardinal Albert Pujols, Milwaukee Brewer J.J. Hardy, Chicago Cub Alfonso Soriano, Boston Red Sox Manny Ramirez, Tampa Bay Devil Ray Carl Crawford, and Minnesota Twin Justin Morneau. Pitchers selected to each league include Los Angeles Dodger Brad Penny, San Diego Padre Jake Peavy, Atlanta Brave John Smoltz, Twin Johan Santana, Angels John Lackey and Francisco Cordero, Oakland Athletic Dan Haren, Indian C.C. Sabathia, and Tiger Justin Verlander.

The AL has won the last nine games that have been decided, the only game they did not win out of the last ten was the infamous tie in 2002 that led to the concept of the winning team getting home advantage in the World Series.

Mr. 3000, Craig Biggio

If you were to ask Craig Biggio when he first dawned a Houston Astros jersey as a rookie midseason call-up in 1988, one year removed from being drafted in the first round out of Seton Hall University, how he hoped to be remembered as a player. The answer you would probaby get was that he wanted to be known as a player that played hard, and played the game the way the game was supposed to be played. 20 years later, after playing hard and the way the game is supposed to be played, Craig Alan Biggio became the 27th player in Major League Baseball history to reach 3000 career hits on Thursday night in front of 42,537 fans at Minute Maid Park.

"Today was a special day." Biggio said in the post game press conference. "I'm proud... that I played the game the same way that the guys before me played the game."

A line drive up the middle off of Rockies starter Aaron Cook in the bottom of the seventh inning solidified Biggio's status in the 3000 hit club, but he wasn't satisfied quite yet, he wanted to stretch this special hit from a single to a hustling double. Although he was thrown out, Biggio was mobbed by his teammates on the field, first by Brad Ausmus who had just scored the tying run on the milestone hit, then the rest of the dugout and bullpen flooded onto the field. Soon after, his wife Patti and daughter Quinn rushed onto the field to congratulate Craig. After nearly a ten minute celebration in which a banner commerating the hit was unveiled above the train track in left field, the game appeared that it was going to start until Craig spotted an old friend in the dugout, former Astro Jeff Bagwell.

"(Bagwell) told me that I had to get it done by Saturday or he was going to go back on his golf trip," Biggio said. Biggio grabbed his friend and former teammate of fifteen years from the dugout and drug him onto the field to soak in the ovation from the fans. "The fans didn't have an opportunity to say goodbye to Baggy, not between the lines at least... I wanted him on that field, between the lines, one more time with me, to really let the fans say goodbye, say hello, say thank you, so many things. To me that's what it was about."

Lost in the splendor of Biggio's 3000th his was the game itself. The fans that had left after the hit and after the bullpen served the team with another defecit, missed the comeback in the bottom of the eighth with home runs by Lance Berkman and Mike Lamb. They also missed hit number 3001 in the ninth innning, and hit number 3002 in the eleventh inning. Biggio also scored on the walk-off grand slam hit by Carlos Lee to give the Astros the win 8-5. Brian Moehler benefited from the homer to receive the win and Rockies reliever Brian Fuentes was tagged with the loss.

Dynamo's Davis Wins MLS Player of the Week, Goal of the Week

It must be great to be a member of the defending MLS Cup Champion Houston Dynamo right about now --especially if your name is Brad Davis.

Davis, this week, was named the league's player of the week because of his three goal performance last Thursday against Chivas USA at the University of Houston's Robertson Stadium. It was Davis's first career hat-trick. The men in orange blew away Los Goats by a score of 4-0 in front of a crowd of 14,000.

Davis recorded goals in the 50th, 70th, and 75th minutes. The first goal of the game, however, was courtesy of Brian Mullan in the 6th.

In the 50th, Wade Barrett found Davis making a run from the left flank angling just inside the 18. The Chivas defense was beat, and Davis snapped a shot upper left 90 of Brad Guzan.

Twenty minutes later it was Davis again --this time fed by Joseph Ngwenya via Stuart Holden. Davis put a great shot to Guzan's lower left 90.

Five minutes later Davis converted on a penalty that was drawn by Mullan after he was tripped up by Jason Hernandez. He struck a great ball right down the middle. It tickled the cross bar and broke the net to make the hat-trick complete.

After the game, Davis said he's happy to contribute any way he can --especially with the absence of four key players.

"With the guys gone, we needed someone to step up," Davis said. "Joseph [Ngwenya] has come in and done a great job. I'm very happy to be able to contribute to the team as well -whether it's serving the ball in or whatever. I've wanted to score some goals, and tonight that happened."
